Fans who were looking forward to Scalebound were less than excited to start the year with news of the game being canceled. That news may have just been the end of Platinum's role in the game, as the trademark was just renewed. According to Justia Trademarks, Microsoft filed for an extension of the trademark earlier this month and had it granted. As news of the extension made its way around the Internet, Twitter insider X-Rays revealed an insider report claiming that Scalebound's development has resumed.
We still don't know much about the game, and X-Rays was only able to share that the new team is an "important" one that's "close" to Microsoft. Scalebound's development was reportedly rebooted and is being worked on from the ground up all over again, so we could still be waiting a long time before seeing the fruits of the new team's labors. The response has been less than stellar, as fans were looking forward to Platinum's version rather than somebody else's take.
If we're truly looking at a reboot of the IP from another developer, it seems unlikely that we'll see it brought up during Microsoft's E3 showcase. It's also questionable whether Scalebound will retain its Xbox Play Anywhere status or if the game will still be coming to PC in the first place. Microsoft could always just be renewing the trademark so Platinum can't court another publisher to help release the game under the same name. Regardless of Microsoft's motives, we can confirm that the Scalebound trademark is indeed alive and well.
Insider Report: Do you remember Scalebound? Development is resumed, led by and entrusted to an important "close" MS team. Info soon!
